A Mother’s Promise

I’ll do better, my baby, I promise you this
I’ll stop being distracted; I realize I miss
The small little things that you try to show me
Hours later I see how neglectful I can be

I’ll do better, again; I’m sorry I’ve failed
When I snapped I saw how your face suddenly paled
The excuses I give mean nothing to you
But every day is a chance to start over anew

I’ll do better, I promise, so maybe tomorrow,
I can catch myself before causing you sorrow
I know you’re exhausted; I’ll try harder than ever
I try to teach patience when it’s also my lifelong endeavor.

I’ll do better, I’ll do better.
