Afghanistan, July 2010, Camp Delaram

I googled my parent unit that was stationed in California. Once the Internet let me slowly navigate to the webpage, I wrote down the number for the Officer of the Day’s desk. The officer of the day is a randomly assigned junior officer or a staff non-commissioned officer who stands a 24 hour duty at the regiment. The OOD is in charge of all people and property within the command during their 24 hour shift. All domestic abuse incidents, drinking and driving arrests, and Marines jumping from the third deck balcony with ponchos as parachutes were the bane of the OOD’s existence.

I walked over to the phone and dialed the number.

“Good morning sir or ma’am, this is Combat Logistics Regiment 17, Captain Sullivan speaking, how may I help you?”

“Good evening, sir, this is Corporal Cannon. I am looking for my husband who works in Communications Company.”

“Umm, who is your husband?”

I told him my husband’s name and rank.

“Have you tried his cell phone?”

“Yes, sir, he isn’t answering.”

“Well, try back later.”

“Sir, I’m in Afghanistan and he isn’t picking up the phone.”

“Maybe he’s busy.”

The Captain was nonchalant. I wasn’t getting anywhere with him.

“Sir, he hasn’t answered in three weeks. Or my emails.”

There was a silence on the other side of the line.

His voice was suddenly business-like.

“Yes, sir.”

“What did you say his name was?”

He gathered my husband’s name and the platoon he was supposedly in.

“Please hold on.”

The phone was set down. I heard the Captain relay the story to his assistant duty, a Gunnery Sergeant who said, “Oh no.”

Five minutes passed before the Captain picked up the phone again.

“What’s your email?”

“, sir.”

“Alright. I talked to his commanding officer. They are getting in touch with him now. You should receive an email from me when it’s okay for you to call back.”

“Yes, sir, thank you.”

“Sure thing. Stay safe, Marine.”

I hung up the phone.

Fuck. I guess I didn’t think the CO would get involved. He’s going to be in so much trouble. Well, hell, good. That will teach him not to ignore his wife who is in a combat zone. Fucker.

I received an email about 10 minutes later.

Call the duty phone.

I rang the OOD number again.

“Good morning sir or ma’am, this is Combat Logistics Regiment 17, Captain Sullivan speaking, how may I help you?”

“Sir, it’s Corporal Cannon.”

“Yes, here he is.”

The phone was handed to my husband, who cheerily said hello.

“Hey, what’s up?”

I heard him laughed to the ODD.

“Yes, sir, I’ve got it. Thank you.”

“I’ll leave you two alone.”

“Thank you, sir.”

The officer walked away from my husband and left him on the duty phone. Once the officer was out of earshot, my husband hissed at me.

“What the FUCK do you think you’re doing? Are you fucking crazy? I got dragged into the CO’s office!”

“You were ignoring my emails and my calls! What was I supposed to do? I emailed your dad and your brother. Neither of them are responding to me either.”

“Yeah, I told them what you did. I don’t want anything to do with you.”

“What? Why?”

I knew why.

“You’re fucking pregnant from someone else in Afghanistan!”

“There’s a lot going on out here, I need to talk to you.”

“Since the CO is making sure I talk to you, go ahead, what do you have to say?”

His voice was so sharp that my mind went blank. How could I explain everything that had gone on in the last few months?

“I need a friend. Please. You said you would always be my friend. We haven’t seriously spent some time around each other in almost a year and a half. Between your deployment and min-”

He cut me off.

“I. Don’t. Want. To. Be. With. You.”

I was crying at this point.

“Please, please! You said you would stay with me even if I got pregnant. Remember? It was a risk. Remember what you said to me when we got married?”

The line was silent.

“I love you, please don’t do this.”

“Do not tell the command that I am not answering your phone calls. I don’t need this shit.”

“No, I won’t. I won’t say anything to them again. I promise. I just needed to know why you weren’t answering. Just please answer my emails or something.”

“Yeah, sure.”

“I love you.”

I hung up the phone and wiped away my tears before walking back to my computer. I put on Weeds again and judged Nancy’s life choices.
