Please read the beginning of this story as shown within the “Afghanistan Story” tab above.
Afghanistan, June 2010, Camp Delaram
Boots dangling off of the black metal footboard of my bed, I propped the pillows that I had stolen from empty cans behind my head and pulled my laptop onto my stomach. I couldn’t put my boots on the white comforter. Putting my feet on the bed would get the place that I sleep all sandy, and all I wanted was to be very far from the sand that permeated through everything.
Opening a Word document, my hands hovered over the keyboard, waiting to form what I wanted to say and what ached in my heart.
Dearest Baby Of Mine,
Welcome to the world! You are so loved and wanted by your mother and your father. I’m already so amazed at what you have been through. You are definitely going to be tough! I can’t wait to hold you in my arms and kiss your sweet cheeks. You are currently about five weeks along and your due date is March 9th, 2011. I can’t wait for you to meet your sister, Evie. I bet your thighs will be just as chunky as hers are. You’ll be a year and three months younger than she is. I bet you’ll be fast friends.
Baby, you are so loved. We would do anything for you.
I love you and I’ll see you soon.
I saved the document as “To My Baby” on my external hard drive. I closed the laptop and placed it on the floor next to the bed.
I’ll just close my eyes for a minute.
I fell asleep with my boots still on and dangling into sandy space.
******Writer’s Note- I have the external hard drive. I found it in the attic a few days ago. However, it needs to be cloned and the data extracted because the hard drive broke when I left Afghanistan. I will probably not get the data extracted. To be honest, I don’t want to read exactly what I wrote to the baby as an innocent 20 year old. This recreation is accurate enough for this story’s rough draft and it shows roughly what I said.******
